Retirement

Opportunities for seniors in the Monadnock Region to stay active and involved are abundant.  Physical health is a primary component to staying engaged in community life.  Structured physical activities for seniors are available through the Keene and Peterborough Recreation Centers, the Keene Senior Center and the Keene Family YMCA. The beautiful parks and hiking trails provide excellent opportunities exercise and spending time in nature.

Eating well is also important! There are several community garden sites for seniors, nutrition counseling, and, if needed, Meals on Wheels.

Being an active senior also requires finding meaningful engagement with others and ideas.  The Keene State College CALL (Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning) program allows seniors to enroll in courses as varied as any college curriculum.  Book, game and social groups meet regularly throughout the region and are welcoming to new members.  The Monadnock Volunteer Center (RSVP) connects seniors with opportunities to assist others in the community and offers a home visiting program for homebound seniors.  Advice to assist seniors regarding benefits, resources and activities is readily available at Servicelink via their website at www.nh.gov/servicelink or by calling (866) 634-9412.

Why I Love it Here!

Jim Rousmaniere of Roxbury, moved to the region from Baltimore 36 years ago; he retired as president and editor at the Keene Sentinel and now works from home as an independent writer.  He finds the best part of living in the Monadnock Region is the collaborative spirit of its people.  "There is a collaborative can-do spirit in the DNA," he says.

His favorite activities are beekeeping, racquet sports, snowshoeing and forestry.  His favorite place is Dublin Lake and favorite festival is The Wyman Tavern Brewfest.
